PROFIBUS (Process Field Bus) is a standard for fieldbus communication in automation technology and was first promoted in 1989 by BMBF(German department of education and research) and then used by Siemens. It should not be confused with the PROFINET standard for Industrial Ethernet. PROFIBUS is openly published as part of IEC 61158. Main Differences:

Both use Manchester bus powered (MBP) and are perfectly usable with FISCO – a concept which has already proven itself in the field. Thus both technologies can be easily used in explosion-hazardous areas. FOUNDATION fieldbus, on the other hand, was designed specifically to address the needs of process automation — including providing safe and effective real time process control on the bus. Because both Profibus PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus are digital buses, they have the potential to provide certain advantages over traditional point-to-point Profibus FMS Fieldbus Message Specification (Industrial messaging between PLCs), the first to have been used. Profibus PA Process Automation ( Power supply and signal on the same cable, up to 31.25 kbits / s.) Profibus DP Decentralized Periphery (Up to 12 Mbps.) Cable. Shielded twisted pair, carefully insulated by conductive foil and braid. Profibus is a classical serial fieldbus and Profinet is an industrial Ethernet standard.

2020-06-10 32 stations use profibus for distances upto 1200 meters, while 2 stations communicate at speed of 500 kbps for distances upto 400 meters. Low speed transmission supports higher distances while high speed transmission supports lower distances. Modbus RS485 cable should be less than 700 meters. Number of master and slave devices 2010-05-05 2020-04-30 How to Pick the Right Fieldbus Protocol . There are four leading types of protocols commonly used in process plants: HART, PROFIBUSPA, FOUNDATION Fieldbus and WirelessHART.All four of these protocols are designed to connect field instruments to control and monitoring host systems, typically a distributed control system (DCS) or an asset management system (Figure 1).

PROFINET is a fieldbus system which is based on Ethernet.

Each fieldbus standard offers specific characteristics. PROFIBUS was introduced in the early 90s by PI. Currently, it is the leading fieldbus technology in terms of functionality and adoption. By 2019, there were over 62 million PROFIBUS nodes installed worldwide. Today, the trend continues with Industrial Ethernet standards, such as PROFINET.

Different protocols work better in different applications, so let's get an overview of three important industrial communication protocols, i.e. Modbus, Profibus, and Fieldbus and see what are their own key strengths and applications, although sometimes their functioning As a result, there are now quite a few variations in the field. The specification document is fewer than 100 pages in length, which is a good indication of the protocol’s low level of complexity. In comparison, Profibus’ specification document is thousands of pages long.

Fieldbus, Industrial Ethernet | PI North America was founded as PROFIBUS fieldbuses and industrial Ethernet in general, and PROFIBUS and PROFINET in  The MGate 5111 supports both Modbus RTU/ASCII/TCP master and slave modes, so that you can easily connect your Modbus device to PROFIBUS PLCs or  PI North America is dedicated to showing industry the benefits of using Industrial Ethernet and fieldbuses in general; specifically PROFIBUS and PROFINET.

The short answer is: although both “buses” are very similar, they are not the same! Here is what’s different: PROFIBUS is the overall name for a process fieldbus solution that includes the application and industry-specific PROFIBUS DP, PROFIBUS PA, PROFINET, and PROFIsafe. Whereas Fieldbus Foundation and Profibus-PA are FISCO-compliant (explosion-proof buses), slower and more complex networks for the process industry (instrumentation). Both use telegrams that piggy-back on fasster netorks to connect to their controllers: H1 ethernet for FF, Profibus-DP for Profibus-PA. I think it's better to forget F.Fieldbus and Profibus-PA. Due to the distance, the cabling cost may be less than the cost of using the network. (You must buy special equipment (PA or F.F device) to use in network and these devices are a bit more expensive.) There are advantages and disadvantages of each method (Hardwire & Network) Regards, MRG: Suggestion 2020-04-30 · What is Fieldbus and Profibus?

Both the FOUNDATION fieldbus™ and. PROFIBUS-PA fieldbus fulfil the demands. The emphasis of Foundation fieldbus is to bring the control architecture to the bus and the field devices.

A fieldbus trunk or segment – either FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 or PROFIBUS PA – is a single twisted pair wire carrying a digital signal and DC power. Most devices are two-wire bus-powered units requiring 10 to 20mA. However, it is also possible to have 4-wire fieldbus devices in the case of devices with a high current draw.

Since PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus are based on the same physical layer, the same type of field distribution devices like Segment Protectors and FieldBarriers can be used for both networks. Unlike on PROFIBUS PA, FOUNDATION fieldbus typically does not require a Segment Coupler but interfaces directly into the DCS control system via a H1 fieldbus interface card (see picture above).

Systems based on conventional architecture can also benefit from the wire reduction made possible by field-level networks. Since PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus are based on the same physical layer, the same type of field distribution devices like Segment Protectors and FieldBarriers can be used for both networks.
